A Common Sense Approach to Breakfast

A Common Sense Approach to Breakfast

What did you have for breakfast today?

Most people have some go-to meals they use to eat for breakfast every single day.

But if you’re into fitness, you’re not just eating whatever is convenient. You want to eat the healthiest, most nutritious meals all the time so you can get in shape and feel good about your body. And this includes eating a healthy breakfast as well.

So what is a healthier alternative to a traditional American breakfast consisting of juice, coffee, and sugar-rich foods such as cereals?

First, let’s look at the number one rule for a healthy breakfast.

Above anything else, you should ensure that your breakfast keeps you satiated until lunchtime. Otherwise, you could fall into a trap of unhealthy snacks.

Snacking every now and then is fine, but if cookies before lunch become your habit, you will easily surpass the recommended calorie intake.

There are two types of food that will keep you satiated for hours.

Protein & fat-rich foods Fiber-rich foods

The best example of a food rich in protein and fat is eggs. A single egg will have only 75 calories even though it contains 7 grams of protein and 5 grams of fat. You could say that eggs are the perfect choice for breakfast.

But there are also many other foods rich in protein and fat such as dairy products, avocados, and many types of meat.

Now, let’s talk about fiber.

The more fiber you eat, the slower your digestion will be. This means that the same amount of energy will be released slower into your bloodstream. And you won’t have “sugar crashes” that usually follow periods of restlessness after a carbohydrate-rich meal. Instead, your energy will be constant and you’ll feel full for hours. So you won’t have to eat again before breakfast.

If you were wondering what to eat for breakfast, now you have some general guidelines. Protein, fat, and fiber are the way to go, generally speaking.

In case you want a really simple and healthy breakfast, you can always cook some eggs and eat them with fiber-rich oatmeal.

Bon appétit!
