Welcome to another episode of MythBuster Mondays!
Greetings!
Today's myth is one that isn't said, but is widely practiced.
It's the assumption that running shoes are good for all workouts.
(Seriously next time you go to the gym pay attention to the shoes that everyone is wearing.
Many are probably wearing running shoes even though they wouldn't be caught dead on the treadmill.
Running shoes are cushy, convenient, and great for running.
However, when it comes to weightlifting, they're not the best.
Why?
Because the extra cushion in running shoes makes them unstable under heavy weight.
Lifting power comes from the ground.
And when your feet aren't firmly planted, this causes an "energy leak" which means less power output.
That means weaker, less explosive lifts, squats, lunges, etc.
So, what kind of shoes should you wear? You want shoes that are:
- Completely flat
- Have a hard sole and supportive
- Tough and durable
Something like Converse. There are also athletic shoes that look like socks as well. The stronger your connection to the ground, the better.
A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research says that weightlifting shoes reduce the chances of lower back injuries.
And they improve performance by minimizing forward trunk lean displacement.
Now once you get your workout shoes, there's something else you'll want to do to improve your performance...
