Monday Mythbuster #37: Fasted Cardio Is Better

Losing weight can feel like a never-ending battle, right? You put in all this effort for weeks or even months, and what do you get? Zilch, nada, zero results!

It's no wonder people are on the hunt for quick fixes and secret potions. They believe that the key to shedding those extra pounds lies in some mysterious workout technique or a mind-bogglingly complex diet plan.

Enter fasted cardio, the shining star of these so-called "magic solutions" to weight loss that has gained popularity in recent years.

So, what exactly is fasted cardio? Well, it's pretty simple, my friend. The only difference between regular cardio and this fancy "fasted" version is that you do the latter on an empty stomach.

Picture this: you roll out of bed, groggy-eyed and hungry, and jump straight into your workout routine. At this point, your blood glucose levels are as low as a limbo champion because you haven't eaten in a solid eight hours. (Let's set aside the diabetes and insulin resistance topic for another day; it's a whole different ball game!)

The idea behind fasted cardio is that when your body is starved of glucose, it taps into its fat reserves for energy. In theory, this should lead to more fat burning during exercise and ultimately help you shed more pounds than your breakfast-eating counterparts. Sounds promising, right? Well, here comes the twist, my friend.

Unfortunately, the answer to the big question of whether fasted cardio really works like a charm is a resounding NO.

Sure, during your workout, you might be burning a tad more fat since you're doing it on an empty stomach. But here's the bummer: as the day progresses, the rate at which your body burns fat actually slows down. So, in the end, you end up torching the same amount of fat you would if you had a hearty breakfast before your cardio session.

So, what's the bottom line?

Fasted cardio simply ain't worth the sweat and effort.

Seriously, going for a run on an empty stomach can feel like a hangry nightmare, and guess what? It doesn't provide any extra benefits. Remember this golden nugget of truth: the key to weight loss is all about the balance between the calories you consume and the calories you burn.

If you're burning more calories than you take in, voila, you'll start shedding those pounds. That's the only rule you need to stick to with a bulldog-like determination. Everything else, including fasted cardio, is totally up to you.

If you happen to enjoy working out on an empty stomach, then go ahead and keep at it. But if the thought of fasted cardio makes you cringe, fret not, my friend. It's not a make-or-break deal. Just focus on keeping your calorie intake lower than your calorie expenditure, and you'll be golden.

So, in the grand battle against the bulge, remember to have fun, eat mindfully, and keep that body moving. After all, a healthy and happy lifestyle is what truly matters.

Stay fit my friend,
