A Superior Product: Why EAAs are More Beneficial Than Dietary Protein Alone

A Superior Product: Why EAAs are More Beneficial Than Dietary Protein Alone

Key Takeaways

  • Essential Amino Acids are the building blocks of muscle that the body cannot produce on its own, therefore necessitating dietary or supplementary consumption.

  • EAAs are consumed through meats, fish, dairy and poultry, but may not be in sufficient quantities for adequate muscle synthesis.

  • If the athlete does not have enough EAAs in one’s body, muscle recovery will slow and early fatigue will set in during upcoming workouts.

  • Consuming an EAA supplement will account for the missing amino acids from one’s diet and will keep the athlete from feeling excessively sore.

  • Enhance gains with Oh!mino® Muscle Synthesis Activator and Creatine Complex, delivering all nine essential amino acids, including BCAAs, electrolytes, and adaptogens to accelerate muscle growth, recovery, and performance.

A Superior Product: Why EAAs are More Beneficial Than Dietary Protein Alone

The general rule of thumb is to consume roughly one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight.  This is necessary and needed to recover from workouts and to rebuild muscle mass.  However, not all dietary protein is sent directly to lean tissue–some of it is transported to other parts of the body, ultimately not serving the purpose intended when consumed.  Essential Amino Acids, when supplemented, head straight to lean tissue.  Is this supplement truly better than dietary protein alone, or is it simply another fitness fad?

What are Essential Amino Acids?

Essential Amino Acids are nine amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own, therefore, it must be consumed.  EAAs are the building blocks of muscle.  One consumes EAAs daily through different dietary means, but often in ratios unhelpful for optimized muscle synthesis.  This being the case, many athletes choose to supplement with EAAs in order to feel its full effect on muscle building and recovery.

Where are They Found?

EAAs are found in all meats, fish, dairy and poultry.  EAAs make up the proteins that muscle consists of, so when animal products are consumed, the individual will receive some amount of EAAs.  EAAs are ingested via diet, which poses the question for many individuals: if I already eat some amino acids, why should I supplement?

Their Role for Muscle Synthesis

Essential Amino Acids go to the body’s worn-down lean tissue and supply it with the materials necessary for repair and growth.  The body then repairs the muscle with these EAAs, making the muscles stronger and larger.  In a nutshell, this is the process of muscle synthesis; it can only be accomplished with EAAs.  Given that not all EAAs consumed will end up repairing muscle, this begs the question: is supplementation necessary for improved muscle synthesis?

Supplementation

Supplementing EAAs has been a popular choice with athletes for years.  Since EAA ratios found in food are often incomplete for optimal muscle synthesis, many athletes have found success supplementing with a balanced blend of EAAs.  This assures the individual that muscle synthesis will take place, allowing the athlete to fully recover and feel energized for upcoming training sessions.

What About BCAAs?

Some may be taking pause and wondering about the efficacy and possible use of Branched Chain Amino Acids.  What is the difference between these and Essential Amino Acids?  How are they often presented to the consumer?  One will have to conclude that BCAAs are simply not as effective as EAAs.

What are BCAAs?

Branched Chain Amino Acids are a set of three amino acids (L-leucine, L-isoleucine and L-valine), often supplemented to assist with muscle synthesis.  This has also been a widely used supplement for many athletes.  BCAAs promote the same benefits that EAAs promote, so what is the difference?

BCAAs vs. EAAs

The amino acids that BCAAs consist of are Essential Amino Acids, yet these products only contain three of the nine amino acids that the body cannot produce.  EAA supplements contain all nine amino acids, offering the athlete a full profile of muscle-supporting ingredients.  Therefore, when the individual pays for a BCAA product, he is paying full price for a third of the benefits, compared to an EAA supplement.

Artificial Ingredients

Additionally, many BCAA products are full of many additives and artificial ingredients.  Many of these ingredients include dyes, preservatives and sweeteners.  These ingredients are actively working against the health of the individual, even as the athlete takes the product in the effort to advance his wellness.

Muscle Protein Synthesis via Consumption

Muscle protein synthesis is the process of the body’s muscles repairing worn tissue.  The result of this repair is larger and stronger muscles.  Is MPS still possible if the individual does not consume an adequate ratio of EAAs?  What about a complete EAA supplement compared to diet alone?

Result of an Incomplete Ratio

Taking a BCAA supplement will be supplying the body with an incomplete ratio of Essential Amino Acids.  When this occurs, some MPS will take place, but the result will be less effective than both diet alone and a fully balanced EAA supplement.  Muscle recovery will occur, but it will take longer and the athlete may not feel the immediate benefits that he can experience with an EAA supplement or a protein-rich meal (less soreness, more energy, less fatigue during future workouts).

MPS From Diet Alone

As long as the individual is eating enough to compensate for their goals and activity level, MPS will occur.  No EAA supplement is meant to replace actual food, as meals contain key nutrients needed for overall health and longevity.  As far as muscle protein synthesis is concerned, protein-rich meals will get the job done.  However, giving the body an extra dose of EAAs will support the protein already consumed, improved one's recovery experience and reduce soreness.

Result of a Complete Ratio

An EAA supplement with a balanced blend of amino acids will do much to support the protein already consumed.  Not all of the protein from one’s diet will support lean tissue; giving the body extra EAAs allows for optimal MPS to be achieved.  These EAAs head straight to one’s lean tissue, improving recovery time and strengthening muscles.

Muscle Protein Synthesis’ Effect

Muscle protein synthesis is mostly considered for its muscle building properties, and for good reason.  This is what most athletes are chiefly concerned about.  Even so, MPS offers improved recovery for lean mass and the promotion of overall health and wellness.  Actively spurring the body to live in a state of MPS will only yield good results.

For Muscle Building

Muscle protein synthesis is the process of muscle mass repairing itself after being used beyond its limits.  When this occurs, muscle will build back larger and with more strength to accommodate the heavy loads it is enduring.  Muscles growing larger after years of training is the visible and direct result of muscle protein synthesis.

For Muscle Recovery

Not only does MPS work to make lean tissue tougher and larger, but this process is what gives the individual a sense of recovery.  The body needs rest after intense training sessions so that early-onset fatigue does not set in during the next workout.  Through the process of MPS, the athlete will experience the rest and rejuvenation that comes from time outside of one’s workouts.

For Overall Health

When the individual has more muscle mass, all aspects of health are improved.  There is a lessened risk for developing all types of diseases and illnesses.  One’s cognition and mood will be improved, as well as the individual’s skin, tissue and joint health.  The process in which muscle is achieved–as well as having more lean tissue–will benefit one’s entire body, both mind and muscle.

Anabolic Window

The concept of the anabolic window is as follows: the 30 to 60 minutes after one’s workout is the most essential time for supplying the body with nutrients needed for muscle growth.  While the timing is often debated (some state that the window extends to four or five hours post-workout), the importance of supplying the body with key nutrients is not.  Properly supplying the body with nutrients and amino acids is vital for muscle growth, recovery and for one’s overall health.

For Muscle Building

After working out, the body is in a state of need.  It needs to replenish glycogen and provide lean tissue with the ingredients for recovery and growth.  Without adequate refueling, muscle growth will be drastically stunted–one may feel as if no progress is being made.  Giving the body enough amino acids via high protein meals and mindful supplementation will keep the body in a state of consistent muscle building.

For Muscle Recovery

A meal is necessary for muscle recovery, but one does not always have access to a balanced meal directly after performance.  During one’s anabolic window, an Essential Amino Acid supplement will suffice to provide the athlete with the necessary building blocks for improved recovery.  The EAAs will head straight to one’s muscle, starting the recovery process immediately.  The athlete will notice more energy for the next workout as well as less soreness.

For Overall Health

Without enough amino acids in one’s system during the anabolic window, the individual will feel fatigued and drained during waking hours.  The athlete will have increased brain fog and reduced focus.  However, when supplementing with amino acids within the anabolic window, many aspects of the individual’s health will be supported, from mental cognition to muscle recovery.

Oh!mino’s EAA Blend

Well-balanced, high protein meals are essential for health and wellbeing.  However, not all of the amino acids in a meal will be used directly for muscle recovery and growth.  An Essential Amino Acid supplement is necessary to support the protein intake from diet, with the EAAs being transported directly to worn lean tissue.  Our Muscle Synthesis Activator contains all nine EAAs and is more effective than other performance supplements.

All Nine EAAs

Our Muscle Synthesis Activator has each EAA in our patented blend (as well as one semi-essential amino acid).  Every amino acid present is useful for muscle growth and recovery when dietary protein falls short.  The athlete will be supplied with what is necessary for optimal recovery so that one will have energy and endurance for upcoming workouts.

More Effective Than BCAAs and Whey

BCAAs are an insufficient source of amino acids due to its incomplete ingredient list.  Additionally, many whey protein products do not contain adequate EAA profiles–the extra calories derived from such supplements may then end up increasing fat instead of recovering muscle.

Dosage and Timing

Taking our Muscle Synthesis Activator 30 minutes before a workout, during the exercise and within 30 minutes of completing the training session will supply the body with enough amino acids to promote muscle synthesis.  Consuming a meal within one’s anabolic window will give the athlete nutrients for recovery, but this may not always be enough.  By giving oneself an increased amount of amino acids, the athlete will feel less sore the following day and will have more energy for upcoming workouts.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are Essential Amino Acids enough to replace a meal?

No they are not.  Balanced meals with enough protein are essential for quality training sessions–EAAs are useful as a supplementation to the day’s meals.

Can EAAs help to preserve lean tissue when in a caloric deficit?

Yes!  EAAs are an excellent resource to utilize when in a caloric deficit.  EAAs contain minimal calories and will support the life of lean tissue when dietary protein is low.

Are EAAs beneficial if dietary protein intake is already sufficient?

Yes they are.  Not all of the protein consumed via diet will be utilized for muscle protein synthesis.  Supplementing with EAAs fill in the gaps; the body will recover quicker with a balanced diet alongside EAA supplementation.

Do EAAs improve performance, or only recovery from athletic activities?

EAAs improve performance by reducing fatigue and indirectly supporting hydration.  Our Muscle Synthesis Activator contains five key electrolytes, directly improving performance by supporting muscle contractions and overall fluid levels.

Are there any risks to daily EAA consumption?

If one has a chronic medical condition and/or is taking medication, consult first with a doctor.  For healthy adults, EAAs are totally safe for daily consumption, as the body needs amino acids for normal functioning.
