Monday MythBuster #35: You Need To Give Up All Carbs To Lose Weight

Do you believe that carbs are the ultimate enemy to weight loss?

Well, in a certain sense, they are… but that doesn’t mean you absolutely must give up on carbs if you’re trying to lose weight.

Because here’s the deal – carbs are a great energy source.

They’re easily broken down into glucose which your body can then turn into ATP (the so-called energy molecule.)

But not all carbs are equally good energy sources.

You see, there are complex carbohydrates, which are found in rice and vegetables for example, and simple carbohydrates, which are usually found in sugary foods such as candy.

The difference between them is huge when it comes to weight loss.

If you’re used to eating a lot of simple carbohydrates, it’s going to be almost impossible to lose weight.

Why?

Simple carbs give you a quick, but short-term energy boost which means you need to eat them frequently.

In other words, you get sugar highs and sugar crashes.

This is why it’s so easy to consume too many calories if you eat a lot of simple carbs.

And too many calories lead to weight gain.

On the other hand, complex carbs provide you a steady source of energy throughout the day.

Unlike simple carbs, they can aid your weight loss by giving you enough energy without crashes and without too many calories.

The key here is to choose your carbs carefully if you want to lose weight.

For example, you should probably give up sugary foods completely.

But if you’re working out, you will find that rice, potatoes and vegies are your best friends.

By eating complex carbs, you’ll have more energy and you'll speed up your recovery after the workout.

As with many other things in life, carbs are not either bad nor good.

They can be both good and bad for weight loss.

It all depends on you.
