Myth Buster Monday #10.

You know that I've already put an end to Big Whey...

 

Now my next opponent is the BCAA industry.

Why BCAAs?

 

Because aside from swindling millions of dollars every year...

They've been killing the hard-earned gains of gym enthusiasts all over the world.

 

Let me explain...

 

I'm sure you know that protein is required for building muscle. And that the building blocks of protein are amino acids.

We have 22 total amino acids; however only 9 are essential.

The 9 are:

  • Histidine
  • Tryptophan
  • Threonine
  • Isoleucine
  • Leucine
  • Valine
  • Lysine
  • Methionine
  • And Phenylalanine

 

(All of which can be found in Oh!mino's ingredients list.)

Anyway, Isoleucine, Leucine, and Valine, excel in muscle growth the most. So...

a couple of wise guys isolated those 3 amino acids and created BCAAs.

 

Then, (like most questionable things,) they spun some "scientific" jargon around it.

Claiming that BCAAs "create an anabolic environment for muscle growth."

But boy were they wrong!

 

Numerous researchers have since debunked BCAAs almost as much as the flat earth theory.

BCAAs make little to no difference in muscle synthesis when you're already getting an adequate amount of protein.

In fact, BCAAs stimulate less muscle growth than even whey protein (and again, you know my feelings on that.)

But wait, there's more...

BCAAs are even worse for people who fast.

 

A study from the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, states that BCAAs actually break down muscle when used in a fasted state.

 

 Why?

 

Since BCAAs only contain 3/9 essential amino acids. It has to get the remaining 6/9 from your muscle tissue.

This process of breaking down your muscle and rebuilding it brings you very limited results.

So not only are BCAAs inferior in Muscle Synthesis, they can break down existing muscle, as well. 

I personally don't know why they're still popular. Do you?

But I guess I'm not one to talk.
